In Ontario, certain condominium disputes must be handled through the Condominium Authority Tribunal, commonly called the CAT. The CAT is an online tribunal created to provide a faster, more affordable way to resolve specific types of condominium conflicts without going to court.
The CAT has mandatory jurisdiction over disputes involving condominium records, such as access to financial documents, meeting minutes, or governing records. It also handles many disputes about pets, vehicles, parking, storage, and other issues related to nuisances, annoyance, and disruptions that affect the quiet enjoyment of the property by owners and residents, or in some cases the effective operation of the condominium board and management.
If a dispute falls within the CAT’s authority, the parties must use the CAT process before turning to the courts. Other matters may be dealt with through private mediation, arbitration, or the courts.
